Sacro Monte della Madonna del Sasso

Det hellige bjerg af Vor Frue af klippen i Orselina ovenfor Locarno er en helligdom og valfartskirke og det væsentligste hellige bjerg i Ticino.
Ifølge overleveringen viste Jomfru Maria med Jesusbarnet i sine arme sig for franciskanermunken Bartholomæus Piatti (ca. 1450-1511/14) fra Ivrea den 15. august 1480, festdagen for Jomfru Marias optagelse i himlen. Efter dette syn trak Bartholomæus sig tilbage til bjergskråningen for at bede, og han boede i en hule. På stedet for synet blev opført en helligdom til ære for Jomfru Maria.
Komplekset består af Bebudelseskirken ved foden af bjerget, hvor de jordiske rester af Bartholomæus er stedt til hvile, Via Crucis (korsvejen), kirken Madonna del Sasso og klostret, hvor der er et lille museum.
Man kan komme til Helligdommen enten med en kabelbane eller til fods på Via Crucis.

The Sacred Mountain of Our Lady of the Rock in Orselina above Locarno is a sanctuary and pilgrimage church and one of the most important sacred mountain in Ticino.
According to the legend Virgin Mary with Infant Jesus in her arms appeared to the Franciscan monk Bartolomeo Piatti (c. 1450-1511/14) from Ivrea on Assumption Day on August 15, 1480. Following this vision he withdrew to the hillside to pray, living in a cave. At the site where the apparition took place a sanctuary was built in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The architectural complex consists of the church of the Annunciation at the foot of the mountain, where the mortal remains of Bartolomeo were laid to rest, the Via Crucis, the basilica of the Madonna del Sasso and the convent with a small museum.
The sanctuary is linked to Locarno city center by a funicular railway or it can be reached on foot on the Via Crucis.
